Man With the Blue Guitar, The

Commissioned by the Rochester Philharmonic under David Zinman, this overture-like work attempts to create a highly colored, dramatic and sparkling sonic purse out of everyday musical material with the what, how, and why suggested by a painting by Pablo Picasso and a poem based on it by Wallace Stevens, both favorites of the composer.
